Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Mortgage Underwriter to join our team! As a key part of the team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that all residential mortgage loan applications meet the required guidelines. You will be responsible for validating income, assets, and collateral documents—including self-employed tax returns and condominium documents. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, enjoy providing superior customer service, and be passionate about delivering accurate, high-quality underwriting decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
Review and analyze residential mortgage loan applications to determine whether they should be approved or denied.
Assess financial statements, credit reports, ratios (e.g., debt-to-income, loan-to-value), appraisals, title reports, and other relevant documentation.
Validate income, employment information, and the value of a borrower's assets and collateral.
Ensure mortgage loan files meet guidelines for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, USDA, and other relevant programs.
Evaluate loan documents to confirm that they meet established investor standards.
Ensure loan terms and property specifications align with financial institution requirements and government regulations.
Comply with industry standards, state and federal laws, and disclosure requirements.
Communicate loan decisions to internal teams, including lenders, coordinators, and processors.
Provide thorough documentation for approval or denial decisions.
Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
5+ years of recent experience in retail residential mortgage underwriting (FHA, VA, USDA, Conventional), with strong knowledge of agency guidelines.
Expertise in USDA underwriting guidelines.
DE, SAR, and LAPP certifications are a plus.
Strong knowledge of ATR/QM requirements.
Experience with Encompass LOS.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, fluid environment while meeting minimum production standards.
High integrity and a strong work ethic.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Solid understanding of compliance and disclosure requirements.
Knowledge of closing, post-closing, and quality control responsibilities.
Preference for applicants who are based in the Eastern Standard Time zone and able to work EST business hours.
