Job Description

Overview Join to apply for the Criminal Investigator role at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) . This is a high-impact role with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) at ICE. The position may include significant responsibilities and requires meeting various qualifications and assessments as part of the federal hiring process. Responsibilities Conduct and coordinate high-level comprehensive investigations involving individuals, groups, or large organizations operating at local, national, or international levels. Use electronic surveillance, interviews, polygraph examinations, and physical surveillance to obtain evidence. Make arrests, confront multiple suspects, and secure scenes in potentially dangerous environments. Prepare sworn statements, affidavits, and documentary evidence for reports or case records. Prepare sworn testimony on behalf of the government in criminal and federal grand jury cases. Location and Employment Type These positions are located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations at multiple duty locations nationwide. These are non-bargaining unit positions. This is a direct-hire, open continuous announcement with periodic cut-off dates for referrals. Salary and Benefits Salary and locality pay vary by location. Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must certify Selective Service registration. Successful completion of a background investigation (may include a polygraph). Pre-employment medical examination and medical standards assessment may be required. Pre-employment drug test and drug-free workplace requirements apply. One-year probationary period upon appointment. Mobility agreement and ability to live within 50 miles of duty station may be required. Must carry a firearm; certain restrictions apply for domestic violence convictions. Ability to testify in court; may involve travel to polygraph locations at personal expense if referred for polygraph testing. Pre-employment Physical Fitness Test (PFT) required; Basic Training completion is mandatory (FLETC CITP and HSISAT). Background investigation for Top Secret clearance is required; some positions may require additional security checks. Qualifications You qualify for the GL-9 grade level with either: Experience: One year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level or equivalent in investigations and related tasks, including interviews and report writing; or Education: A master’s degree or two academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education; or Combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the requirement. In addition, applicants will be evaluated on competencies such as Problem Solving, Teamwork, Interpersonal Skills, and Flexibility. National Service experience and veterans’ preference considerations may apply per policy.
