Job Description

School Bus Monitors are responsible for assisting children with getting on and off of the school bus safety. Furthermore, they are responsible for their safety while aboard the bus ensuring that students are properly seated. School Bus Monitors must ensure that children get off of the bus at the correct stop and they are being released to proper parent/guardian. The minimum age requirement for a School Bus Monitor is 21.

School Bus Monitors are primarily responsible for assisting children with getting on and off of the school bus at all times.

  1. School Bus Monitors are to ensure children are properly seated and facing forward at all times and remain seated while the bus is in motion.
  2. School Bus Monitors servicing special needs vehicles should ensure children are wearing their seatbelts at all times.
  3. School Bus Monitors are to ensure children are allowed off of the bus at their proper stop and are released to their guardian / parent if so applicable.
  4. School Bus Monitors are to maintain order aboard the school bus at all times.
  5. School Bus Monitors are to follow basic principles of child safety at all times.
  6. School Bus Monitors are to establish good relationships with their bus driver(s), school staff, parents and children.
  7. School Bus Monitors are to ensure all children safely get on and off of the bus at school or at the completion of their bus run. You are expected to work in conjunction with your driver to ensure no child is left aboard the school bus upon completion of its route.
  8. School Bus Monitors should possess active listening skills and understand what children, parents and staff are attempting to communicate to you. You must have the ability to convey information effectively.
  9. School Bus Monitors should possess problem solving skills incorporating sensitivity along with speech clarity and perceptiveness.
  10. School Bus Monitors should be able to follow general rules when caring for children.
  11. School Bus Monitors should have knowledge of public safety and security policies and procedures.
  12. School Bus Monitors should have the ability to assess the needs of children and those around them. Having knowledge of child behavior is imperative and show an ability to exercise appropriate disciplinary techniques.
  13. School Bus Monitors should have the knowledge of relevant equipment aboard their vehicles, policies and procedures.
  14. School Bus Monitors have hours and a work schedule that are determined on an annual basis.
  15. School Bus Monitors are employed on a part time, seasonal basis and only work when school is in session.
  16. School Bus Monitors will refrain from the use of obscene or harsh language.
  17. School Bus Monitors will only wear clothing that is appropriate as outlined in the dress code expectations issued to each employee at the start of employment or the school year.
  18. School Bus Monitors will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.
  19. School Bus Monitors must be self motivated and possess the ability to work with minimum supervision.
  20. School Bus Monitors are required to work both morning and afternoon shifts daily.
  21. Use of tobacco products and electronic devices is strictly prohibited.
Mininum qualifications:
  • High School Diploma
  • Associates Degree preferred
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must be City of Springfield resident
  • Hourly Rate $17.44
