Job Description

The Berkeley Lab's Environment, Health, & Safety Division is hiring a Radiation Control Technician . Reporting to a Radiological Control Technician Supervisor, this position is responsible for supporting radiation protection in assigned areas at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Duties include conducting radiological surveys, verifying worker compliance with radiological standards and ALARA practices, supporting radioactive material shipping and inventory, assisting with radiological characterization and sampling, and participating in air monitoring and waste management. The technician will also respond to radiological incidents, assist in investigations, and utilize specialized equipment for surveys and sample analysis.

What You Will Do:

Perform radiological activities to support Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Radiation Protection Program, ensuring compliance with Radiation Protection Group (RPG) policies. Under close supervision, tasks include:

  • Conducting radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, airborne radioactivity) and generating reports.

  • Surveying laboratory, construction, and remediation areas, as well as releasing materials from controlled areas.

  • Posting/labeling radiologically controlled areas and items.

  • Responding to radiological incidents and emergencies.

  • Providing radiological support for radioactive material preparation, packaging, and shipment.

What is Required:

  • Two years of technical college courses or equivalent experience and education.

  • Basic knowledge of radiation safety, measurement concepts, and radioisotope handling; minimal experience with radiological techniques.

  • Ability to apply radiation safety principles in assigned tasks.

  • Physical requirements: up to 2 hours of sitting, 4 hours of standing/walking, 1 hour of fine manipulation and hand use, and lifting up to 40 lbs. Must perform routine tasks like squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching.

  • Strong written, verbal, and computer communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with senior technicians and customers.

  • Must achieve and maintain DOE-qualified radiation control technician status.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to use established and routine procedures, and apply task qualification.

Salary:

The Radiation Control Technician position is expected to pay $32.81 - $39.52 per hour, which fits within the full salary range of $29.45 - $42.86 per hour for the 747.1 - Radiation Control Tech I position. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.

  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
